International Conference on Natural Capital, Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity

Moscow, 19–20 November 2019

The concept of ecosystem services (ES) is one of the fastest growing areas of environmental policy in the world. The application of the ES concept allows to optimize nature management, to obtain sustainable benefits from natural ecosystems and do no harm to wildlife. ES assessments are currently conducted by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). National ES assessments are carried out within the framework of the UNEP TEEB project (, as well as the MAES (Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services) approach in EU countries as part of the EU biodiversity Strategy 2020. At the same time indicators for national biodiversity strategies and the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs) are being developed.

The conference will uptake and review these processes. Focus of the first day are general questions: ecological transformation processes, assessments of ecosystem services and biodiversity, possibilities of the implementation of biophysical and economic ES in Russia, Germany and internationally as well as governance aspects, i.e. how these assessments can be incorporated into policy and management of land/resource use. The second day will focus on the results of the research project TEEB Russia II.

Presentations will be made by Russian, Belarusian and European scientists, as well as delegations of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, The German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation, the European Environment Agency, etc.
